Hepatitis Management Programme
In 2023, it is estimated that approximately 410,000 individuals were living with chronic hepatitis B in Hong Kong, which might increase their risk of progressing to liver diseases such as cirrhosis and liver cancer if left unmanaged1. The ‘Hepatitis Management Programme’ (Programme) at CUHK Medical Clinic, which includes the Hepatitis Screening Programme and the Hepatitis B Management Programme, is designed to offer patients the early detection, monitoring, and personalised care for hepatitis infections, particularly, chronic hepatitis B.
Potential threats of Hepatitis A, B, and C
Hepatitis A virus (HAV) is primarily spread through the “faecal-oral” route, where individuals having contact with contaminated objects (for example, shellfish or water tainted by the virus). Most people fully recover with lifelong immunity, but a small fraction of the infected people may face fatal complications, such as fulminant hepatitis (acute liver failure).
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is spread through contact with blood or body fluids of an infected person (such as blood contact via contaminated items or needles), mother-to-infant transmission during delivery, and sexual contact.
- According to the Population Health Survey 2020–22 conducted by the Department of Health, about 40% of those tested positive for hepatitis B surface antigen are unaware of their condition, and about 70% of them lack medical follow-up1.
Chronic Hepatitis B (CHB) is a lifelong infection. Without treatment, CHB may lead to severe liver issues such as cirrhosis and liver cancer.
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is mostly spread through infected blood or body fluids and can cause both acute and chronic hepatitis. In 2023, it is estimated that around 17,000 individuals had hepatitis C in Hong Kong1. Around 70% of those infected with HCV will develop chronic HCV infection which may lead to cirrhosis and liver cancer.
Hepatitis A, B, and C have similar symptoms yet varying incubation periods, and they require blood tests for accurate diagnosis. Early diagnosis, treatment, and adequate management are crucial to prevent severe complications.
